De-Stigmatizing Speech Therapy Amongst Asian American Parents

Client’s Key Question: “How can we create marketing plans that reach our target consumers – Asian American parents who fear shame and judgement from their community for seeking therapy for their children?”

Amruta Potdar, a certified speech-language pathologist, has over 20 years of speech therapy experience with various schools and clinics. She had recently decided to open her own practice and had worked with a designer to build a beautiful website. She had started experimenting with social media as well, but she knew she could do more in terms of marketing.

We worked with Amruta to lay out a marketing strategy, grounded in insights she knew about her target consumers – Asian American parents and caregivers of children needing speech therapy. She shared that her clients:
⦁ Experience frustration when not being able to meet their child’s needs
⦁ Have immense social pressure where there is a fear of shame, judgement, and a feeling that their kid must be a ‘go-getter’
⦁ Need the free time that comes when children can be independent
With her deep client understanding, we were able to develop a content strategy for her social media and event communications that are intentional and focused, and thus much more engaging and impactful.

Amruta was able to quickly implement these strategies when she partnered with physical therapist Dr. Ivy Salamanca to conduct a joint workshop for toddlers AND their parents.
